In Simi Valley, not far from Hollywood, you will find the idyllic and multiple award-winning Moorpark Country Club, which hosted an unusual spectacle with beautiful weather conditions in December 2016: The first TV production of VICE GOLF with protagonist Erik Anders Lang. A glimpse behind the scenes reveals that while the team worked hard, they played hard as well. Spectacular landscapes and absolute tranquility despite its immediate proximity to Los Angeles made the Moorpark Country Club a very special location. Meticulous care of the course and exceptional hospitality formed an ideal foundation for successful days of shooting the first VICE GOLF TV commercials.

During the early hours of the December morning, the 30-person team arrived at the Moorpark Country Club and made final preparations for the first day of shooting. The participants include mostly actors and camera crew members. But editors, make-up artists, and sound architects also provided support and transform the golf course into a professional shooting location. Clear the stage for “Unsolicited AdVICE”, Part 1.
The protagonist and face of the campaign is none other than Erik Anders Lang, famous from “SkratchTV” and “Adventures in Golf.” In these documentaries, Erik travels across the world, challenging strange myths about golf. The match between VICE GOLF and Erik is obvious: Long before the start of shooting, Erik was a huge fan of VICE GOLF and his stylish, friendly, and highly professional demeanor make him the perfect star for the campaign. In each commercial, Erik gives “unsolicited adVICE” to golfers who spend too much money on quality golf balls.
Commercial 1: VICE golfers need new challenges. Normal par 5s with 600 yards are a thing of the past. For VICE golfers, you need to build new “back tees” that are moved back at least 250 yards. We don’t shy away from such obstacles, even if these tees are located in the wilderness and had to be prepared using heavy equipment. But that’s easier said than done: starting up a lawn trimmer already causes some problems.
Commercial 2: Just a few holes away, we spent a lot of time at this tee because – despite his single digit handicap – it took several attempts for Erik to get a hole-in-one ;) The commercial’s core statement: hole-in-ones do not come easy at any cost. So the exceptional price-performance ratio of VICE GOLF balls comes just in time.
Commercial 3: Following the successful hole-in-one, we moved to the next location (still on the same day ;)), with the two golfers, now well advanced in age, ideally embodying the cliché of golf ball retrievers. Erik shows that with VICE golf balls, retrieving balls is a thing of the past. In the end, Erik also gives a small yet clear piece of style adVICE.
Commercial 4: A member of the Moorpark Country Club returns to his locker in the changing rooms with boxes full of VICE golf balls, having concluded the deal of his life. He believes that the VICE GOLF price is a great one time deal. Erik explains the VICE GOLF principle to him, including the permanently low prices of VICE GOLF. The actors are clearly having fun improvising their dialog.
Scene change – Commercial 5: Back at the clubhouse, Erik – surrounded by three women – draws a VICE golf ball from the unsteady golf ball Jenga tower. As he does so, he explains why he saves so much money with VICE golf balls, so that he can focus on other vices. The next round of drinks is on Erik! The women are charmed and definitely want to join Erik at his next round of golf.
Commercial 6: On our way to the Pro Shop, we stumble upon a couple of rattlesnakes. Luckily, our team makes it to the Pro Shop without any snakebites. Here, the talented Pro Shop owner proves just how cool a middleman can be. He advises the customer against purchasing golf balls at the Pro Shop. Erik jumps in, adding why the customer can save a lot of money online. Working out the lighting of the Pro Shop was quite elaborate as it was already dark outside – But thanks to the ultra-bright lamps outside of the Pro Shop, it was easy to illuminate the Pro Shop late in the evening.
